The most impressive gothic sacral building in Prague the construction of which lasted from the mid-14th to the early 16th century. In the late 17th century the church interior was rebuilt in the baroque style. Its interesting decorations include valuable altar paintings by Karel Skreta and a tombstone of the astronomer Tycho de Brahe.

John Huss (Jan Hus) was a Bohemian theologian who became Confessor to the Queen under King Wenceslas IV. He opposed the selling of indulgences, and was convicted of heresy and burned at the stake. This set off the Hussite Wars which lasted until 1435. Huss became revered as a martyr. His 1915 monument displays his last words: "Truth will prevail."
