中国宝塔之王――定州塔,又称开元寺塔、料敌塔,是国内现存最高的一座砖质结构塔,此塔于1961年3月4日列为国家重点文物保护单位。
  定州塔建在开元寺塔内,故名“开元寺塔”,又名“开元宝塔”。考定县志载,此塔为宋代所建。宋真宗时,开元寺的和尚“会能”常到西竺(西域天竺)取经,得“舍利子”回来。咸平四年(公元1001年),皇帝诏“会能”建塔,把“舍利子”埋在塔底下石匣内(即金棺银椁)。建塔工期从咸平四年(1001年)开始,到宋仁宗至和二年(公元1055年)告成,前后共经历五十四年,工程浩大用材极多,有“砍尽嘉山(曲阳境内)木,修成定州塔”的传说。
