Get your Mapsource DVD w/purchase of a Garmin Device
As you might have noticed if you just purchased a new Nuvi, many of these devices don't come with a Mapsource DVD. Although the POIs and map detail is already loaded on your device. This makes it difficult to prepare routes without the Mapsource software on your PC.
However, there is a trick and the American buyer (only) is entitled to the disk, and if they send an email to Garmin via their support web page: http://www.garmin.com/contactUs/techSupport.jsp
including their unit serial number etc., Garmin will send you the DVD for free. Then, using the unlock code included in the original package (on a yellow sheet), the user can install MapSource onto their PC.

What's MapSource DVD used for?
I just got a reply from Garmin that they are sending me the MapSource DVD. However, based on the email from Garmin (below) what can I use the MapSource DVD for?
"I have placed an order for the Map Source City Navigator DVD on your behalf. Please be aware the device is not designed to be interactive with the software in any way except transferring waypoints. You cannot use the software to transfer maps, tracks or routes as this may disable your device. You will need to use the unlock code provided in the box to unlock the mapping software when loading to your PC."

Mapsource is useful because
Mapsource is useful because you can work on a PC (instead of a 3 inch screen) and create multiple routes to the same area with as many vias as you would like, see which one is better for time or distance, then create some key favorites to replicate the route on your nuvi (it's a pain but the only waysince you can't transfer the route). The preloaded POIs are much easier to work with and identify. It's also useful for updates of the built-in maps (so if you buy an update it comes with it), and to create and load POIs.
Also helpful if you load a map onto your Nuvi and erase your existing maps :)

Per a previous post, I tried to get a MapSource DVD by sending an email to Garmin via their support web page: http://www.garmin.com/contactUs/techSupport.jsp However it appears that Garmin now wants $15 for it :

i have NUvi 660,and .i need this DVD,i will be greateful to you if could let me know how i can get this DVD.i tried by sending them an email,but they decline? i would like to prepare routes using this map source in my computer. is there anybody who can help me? my NUVI is only onemonth old.

Bummer, Garmin also just changed their unlock code options. Looks like they are trying to find ways to squeeze us wherever possible.
