POI Files

I just purchased a Nuvi 360 and have started looking into these POI files I have found some examples but there is so far I have looked at resturants, red light camera location files & WiFi hotspots. This is what I don't get they all look the same Lon, Lat, & a "name" but what I don't get is how does the unit know the difference? and if these are just locations you can go to Who would ever want to go to a red light?

Usually the red light POIs

Usually the red light POIs are useful because you can set up a proximity warning that a certain intersection has a red light camera, and you know that you shouldn't run that light or you'll be ticketed. This also works with speed cameras because you can set a speed warning to tell you there is a speed camera ahead. Speed and red light cameras are very popular in europe (although usage of these tools are growing in the US) and this is a common type of file to download.

I'm not sure the GPS knows the difference between multiple types of POI, but they can be useful if you need to find a wifi hotspot or restuarant.

The GPI files on this site are meant to not only have the POI location but include an audio file that will play when you get within proximity of the location. This is helpful if you want someone to tell you history or information about a monument (for example).

maps for istanbul, Turkey

jettuf's picture

how would I load maps for Turkey? and i have garmin c320 , how can I set up POI file so I can save my data,? thanks..

I'm not very familiar with

I'm not very familiar with the c320. Have you downloaded or created custom POIs in the past? When you connect the c320 via USB to your computer can you see a folder under Garmin/POI ? If so, what's in it?

Garmin's site says only the following models (Garmin TourGuide POIs are currently compatible with the nüvi™, zūmo™, and the StreetPilot® c550, 2730, 2820, 7200 and 7500)are compatible with the TourGuide type of POI (the ones you can download on this site).

Do you have mapsource for the US or Europe already loaded on your GPS? If you have US ones, I think you have to buy the European version of Mapsource - although I'm not sure if that covers Turkey.

Garmin also allows third party developers to make maps, but I didn't see one specifically for Turkey on their site.

How can I get a copy of map source

I recently bought a Nuvi 350 and I was wondering how I get a copy of Map Source. It didn't come with my receiver, but I can register on-line to "unlock" it. I can't find anywhere to download it, so do I have to buy it (again) if I want a copy for my PC?

Get your Mapsource DVD

Garmin doesn't advertise this secret at all, however the American buyer (only) is entitled to the Mapsource disk (if your device comes preloaded with map data), and if they send an email to Garmin via their support web page: http://www.garmin.com/contactUs/techSupport.jsp
including their unit serial number etc., Garmin will send you the DVD for free. Then, using the unlock code included in the original package (on a yellow sheet), the user can install MapSource onto their PC.

Send an e=mail to Garmin requesting your disc and they'll send one out to you.

Got Mapsource DVD

Hey I just wanted to report back that I took your advice and emailed Garmin that I wanted the mapsource DVD. They sent it to me soon after I requested it. Thanks for the tip.

i tried to get mapsource DVD.but they want money lots of money.how can i get this DVD,willing to pay,a small anount.i would like to have this for same reason you have. thanks.

We've heard that Garmin's

We've heard that Garmin's new policy is to charge for the Mapsource DVD, even when you buy a GPS with it preloaded. The price we've heard varies from $15 to full price. We've also noticed that sometimes it depends on which customer rep you talk to so it definitely doesn't hurt to try again and see if you get a different answer from a different rep.

Let us know what Garmin tells you.

Thanks!

dvd

I was just told that they charge $15 for the mapsource dvd.

Integrating Custom POI's

I recently downloaded an update for all the locations of a local Grocery chain (Harris Teeter in NC). I was assuming that once this file was copied into my Nuvi 350, that they would come-up when I searched for them using Where to?> Shopping>Grocery stores. However, in order to locate them I have to go to Where to? > My locations > Custom POIs > Harris Teeter stores. This defeats the purpose of the search function, doesn't it?

Is there any way that I can add this entire list into the existing "Grocery" category?

Thanks

A little more detail would

A little more detail would be helpful..

How did you add them? Did you load a .gpx or .csv file through POI Loader?

Thanks for trying to answer

Thanks for trying to answer my query!
The file downloaded was a .csv file...installed using POI LOader.
When I open the file on my desktop, it looks like an Excel file with 3 columns....the first two appear to be co-ordinates while the third is the store descriptor. I imagine that in order for the system to even stand a chance to integrate them into the main Category search, the system would somehow have to be actually told that these are grocery stores (as opposed to, say, banks)....right now there's nothing in the file that I can see that would tell the Nuvi this.

Thanks.

Searching for custom POIs

Alan,

After reading your post I realized I didn't know how to do this, basically because I never thought about it. But I can see how having the device tell you distance to the nearest custom POI could be desirable. So I tried to figure out whether it could be done or not on my Nuvi 350. So far I was able to do it by putting my POIs in a GPX file and putting them in the Garmin -> GPX folder. This adds your POIs to your favorites list. The downside is that for some reason after you reboot your device it will take all your POIs and put them in the file "current.gpx" and delete your POI file. This is bad because if you ever want to remove those POIs you have to actually pull out the individual waypoints from the current.gpx file. Alternatively, you can use the favorites menu and delete them individually. Both of these options in my opinion are lousy if you have a lot of waypoints like all the Harris Teeter stores in NC. I'll keep looking around and let you know if I find anything, but for now this is the best way I know to do this. To find the closest store just go to your favorites menu and the stores will be listed with all your other favorites. It's a clumsy solution but it works.

google earth

has anyone else had trouble using google earth with their Nuvi 350?

it cant find my gps and load what i want it to.

thanks,
skoger

I'm assuming this is with

I'm assuming this is with Google Earth Plus/Pro right?

When you pick GPS->Historical->Garmin->Import
You should get a dialogue that says "Importing data from XXX"

What language is your computer and Google Earth set to? I have heard of problems with this not working with Google Earth not working in other languages. If you're using a non-English version of Google Earth try changing your computer settings to English language and re-download Google Earth in English.
1) switch system to English, restarted the computer
2) download Google earth again.
3) opened the GPS tool
4) under the historic data feature push the import button

See how that works..

Nuvi's should work well with Google Earth

Creating a POI file on an SD card and accessing it via Garmin

I had created a customer POI file on internal Garmin memory and was using it. I got more points of interest and tried to transfer them to the device memory using POI loader but it couldn't complete successfully becasue the file was too large and was not able to fit into the device memory.

I got a 2GB SD card and created a POI file with the help of POI loader. It was successfully created on the SD card but when I put the card in my Garmin 650 and click on Extras, it does not show me the SD card or the Points of interest. However; if I select the picture viewer, it gives me two options i-e "Garmin" and "Memory Card" and I am able to select and find pitures saved on the SD card but the point of interest file is not loading up.

does the 200W play sounds from poi files?

Hello,

I have a 200W and have installed a POI, first on an SD card and then in a X:/garmin/poi folder I created in the 200W's memory. The same POI shows up twice under extras/custom POIs and I can simulate navigation to it. However, I hear no sound/music and see no picture when arriving. Also, I do not see a speaker icon when accessing the POI. Is it that the 200W does not do sounds or is it me?

Thanks
