Frequently Asked Questions

How do I delete audio content that I've uploaded to the site?

To delete the audio that you have already uploaded to the site, first click the "My Account" link on the left navigation block. Next, click on "Listen to [username's] recent audio files." This will take you to a page that lists the titles of the audio you have uploaded to the site. Click on the title of the audio content you wish to delete. Now click on the "edit" tab just below and to the right of the title. All the properties of the audio content page can be edited at this point. To delete the page and the audio file completely, scroll down and click on the "delete" button at the bottom. Once the page content is deleted, the audio file and all related information including attachments are deleted as well.

What happens if I have 2 TourGuide files for the same location?

Most TourGuide files have a proximity alert enabled for them to play automatically and if there are two files for the exact same location the one that is triggered first will play. However, the second TourGuide file will automatically play immediately after the first.

Can I associate a picture with a TourGuide file?

Yes, although technically the picture is associated with the MP3 and embedded in the ID3 tag associated with the audio file. When the TourGuide plays, it is possible to view the picture by clicking on the file which will show a scaled down version of the picture. If you select the picture it will take you to a larger version on the device.

I made a TourGuide .gpi file with Garmin's POI Loader, can I upload them to the site for others to use?

Absolutely! Most of the .gpi’s on this site have been contributed from the community. However, our automated upload interface is currently under maintenance, please send us a message from the Contact Us form HERE (must be logged in) and we will assist you in manually uploading the .gpi file and credit you as the creator.

Do TourGuide files work with GPS devices from other manufacturers besides Garmin?

No, the .gpi files available on this site are meant for specific Garmin devices. These include the following Garmin devices: the nüvi™, zūmo™, and the StreetPilot® c550, 2730, 2820, 7200 and 7500. For a more complete comparison of Garmin’s devices please go HERE.

Is there any way that I can request a TourGuide file be created for a particular location?

Yes, there are two ways to request a TourGuide for a specific location. 1) Go to the “Contact Us” page HERE (must be registered and logged in) and let us know or 2) Post on our forum HERE.

We also welcome customer created audio and will be happy to generate the .gpi file and return it to you for a location of interest. Interesting audio (not necessarily professionally made) is a key limitation and we welcome user submitted audio. Please contact us for the best way to upload audio to www.geotourguide.com

Where can I find TourGuide files available for download?

You can get a complete list of files available for download in the Directory HERE, or search from the home page http://www.geotourguide.com

I noticed the files available for download on this site vary in size, some are quite large (20+ MB) and some are smaller (2+ MB). Why?

Some of the TourGuide files on this site only contain audio for one site or are limited in length, and some contain multiple audio files for more than one location. Similar to other custom POIs, the only limitation on the number of TourGuide files is the memory on the device (either internally or from removable media like an SD card). Many times a single file is made available to allow for more flexibility in choosing certain locations or limiting large downloads. We are in the process of posting audio only to sample the file before download.

What GPS devices are compatible with Garmin TourGuide files?

Currently TourGuide files are only compatible with certain Garmin device models. These include the following Garmin devices: the nüvi™, zūmo™, and the StreetPilot® c550, 2730, 2820, 7200 and 7500. For a more complete comparison of Garmin’s devices please go HERE.

What is a Point of Interest (POI)?

A Point of Interest, or POI, is a specific point location that someone may find useful or interesting. An example is a point on the Earth representing the location of the Space Needle, or a point on Mars representing the location of the mountain, Olympus Mons.

The term is widely used in Cartography, especially in electronic variants including GIS, and GPS navigation software. In this area the location of this point is called a waypoint.

What is a .gpi file?

The .gpi file format is a proprietary format used by Garmin devices for custom POIs. These can include red light cameras, store locations or any other custom POI. In addition, compatible Garmin devices use the .gpi file format for TourGuide files.

What is a .gpx file?

The .gpx file format is a commonly used format for storing waypoints, tracks, and routes. GPX stands for GPS eXchange Format, which is an XML schema designed for transferring GPS data between software applications. Many different device manufacturers support the .gpx file format.

What is a Garmin TourGuide file?

A Garmin TourGuide file in its simplest form is a custom POI with a properly formatted MP3 saved as a .gpi file. Garmin has enabled the capability to associate an MP3 file with a point of interest (POI) on compatible devices. A proximity alert can be set to automatically play the associated MP3 file when the device is near the set POI.

It is possible to create a GPX file with associated MP3 files that will play similar to a TourGuide file. However, these are not true “TourGuide” files and differ in two key aspects: 1) Once a file starts to play it cannot be turned off (will not show the speaker icon visible with a TourGuide file) and 2) When played, the file will not display “TourGuide” at the top of the screen.
