  • Carlyle House - London- Intro to Thomas Carlyle, Scottish author who lived in London. Audio: 7:15 minutes Frommer's Review From 1834 to 1881, Thomas Carlyle, author of The French Revolution, and Jane Baillie Welsh Carlyle, his noted letter-writing wife, resided in this modest 1708 terraced house. Furnished essentially as it was in Carlyle's day, the house is located about half a block from the Thames, near the Chelsea Embankment, along King's Road. It was described by his wife as being "of most antique physiognomy, quite to our humour; all wainscoted, carved, and queer-looking, roomy, substantial, commodious, with closets to satisfy any Bluebeard." The second floor contains Mrs. Carlyle's drawing room, but the most interesting chamber is the not-so-soundproof "soundproof" study in the skylit attic. Filled with Carlyle memorabilia -- his books, a letter from Disraeli, personal effects, a writing chair, even his death mask -- this is where the author did his work.
  • Dr Johnson House - London- Samuel Johnson LL.D. (September 18 [O.S. September 7] 1709[1] – December 13, 1784), often referred to simply as Dr Johnson, was one of England's greatest literary figures: a poet, essayist, biographer, lexicographer and often considered the finest critic of English literature. He was also a great wit and prose stylist whose bons mots are still frequently quoted in print today.

Oxford

  • Bath Place Hotel- The Bath Place Hotel is a cluster of seventeenth century cottages surrounding a tiny flagstone courtyard in the heart of Oxford. The cottages were built in the early sixteen hundreds by Flemish weavers who won permission to build against the outside of the city wall. It is believed there had previously been a communal well and bath house on the site. Going even further back in history, the area now known as Bath Place would have been part of the medieval defence area, being at the foot of the city wall.
