The Atlantichuis is an exceptional building for a number of reasons: it is one of the first business centre offices and it is the first building in Rotterdam to have a built-in parking garage. The name, architectural details and visual art of this art deco building refer to the dynamics of the port and shipping companies. This building is being redeveloped into an apartment building.

The apartments in the new shopping area in the centre of the destroyed city are not built above the shops but behind them in large highrise apartment buildings surrounded by green parks. Delivery lanes behind the shops were designed for stocking up. The pedestrian walkways with porches to protect shoppers from the rain were introduced everywhere around the world following this example.
